Editor’s note: INFOhio wrote the original version of this article

Librarians from Miami University and the University of Cincinnati, with support from INFOhio and OhioLINK, are providing the participants of the Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) with hands-on instruction in using digital library information resources and presenting their research. Students will use INFOhio's ISearch to find STEM materials at appropriate reading levels that are relevant to their research. Participants will also learn about data management and website creation as they prepare for their presentations.

Libraries Connect Ohio Statewide Database Package Cancelling LearningExpress Library, Other Databases

It is with deep regret that the Libraries Connect Ohio (LCO) partnership announces the cancellation of the LearningExpress Library (LEL), Job and Career Accelerator, and Workforce Skills for 21st Century Success subscriptions for Ohioans through public, higher education, and K-12 libraries, effective Aug. 10, 2015. As an important part of workforce development efforts in both secondary and post-secondary education, this cut will be an unfortunate loss.

The partnership’s decision was not arrived at lightly. Due to budgeting concerns, the partnership had to reduce the amount spent on this statewide database package by half a million dollars, and therefore the LOC was impacted. The decision was based on cost and comparative usage.

Two New Members Join OhioLINK

We are pleased to announce the addition of two new members to the consortium: the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) and the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA).  Both institutions, previously affiliates of OhioLINK, are now full members and have access to all of the great benefits available through OhioLINK.

Welcome CIM and CIA!

OhioLINK also is excited to begin the fiscal year with a new tally of institutional library membership within the consortium. After updating membership agreements and discussing the definition of membership, OhioLINK has decided to use a number that separately counts many of the individual libraries from OhioLINK institutions and better reflects OhioLINK’s actual membership.

With that approach, our new member total is 121 libraries, including the State...

OhioLINK Adds ORCID Identifier to ETD Center

Launch marks the first statewide adoption of ORCID

Columbus, Ohio – March 11, 2015 – Starting today, OhioLINK is offering researchers the ability to add a unique researcher identifier when submitting their works to the Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETD) Center.

The Open Researcher and Contributor ID, called an ORCID identifier, provides researchers with a way to manage their intellectual records while also distinguishing their works from others with a similar name. Launched in 2012, ORCID is a community driven undertaking to provide a central registry for researchers, and includes input from universities, publishers, research funders, and professional societies. OhioLINK’s inclusion of the identifier marks the first statewide adoption of ORCID.

“This measure was one of the first issues taken...

OhioLINK and College Credit Plus

Ohio’s College Credit Plus program allows Ohio public school students in grades 7-12 who qualify for college admission to earn secondary and college credit at the same time by taking college courses. Once again at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference, OhioLINK sponsored a presentation overview of library resources available to College Credit Plus faculty, teachers and students with INFOhio's Erica Clay.

To best provide access to this information, there is a video of the 2015 presentation where Clay describes tools and strategies for students embarking on research for College Credit Plus courses.

Kent State Tuscarawas Library’s Innovative ‘Makerspace’ to Provide Entrepreneurs with Tools, Resources

New Philadelphia, Ohio – Students and entrepreneurs in Tuscarawas County soon will be able to test, develop and implement their business ideas through a new “Makerspace” being created by the Kent State University at Tuscarawas Academic Learning Commons.

The OhioLINK member and eastern Ohio regional campus facility is part of a growing trend for libraries to offer these creative spaces where people can gather to create, invent and learn, often using equipment that would be cost prohibitive to purchase independently, such as 3D printers.  A 2013 survey by John Burke, director of the Gardner-Harvey Library, Miami University, found that 109 libraries in the United States had a Makerspace or were close to opening one.

“The University library has evolved. Our...
