Users get an initial 3 week loan period for books and up to 6 more 3 week loan period renewals as long as no one puts a hold on the item at the lending library. This should suffice for most users, but if you have someone who needs it longer and you are tempted to renew for a longer loan period, please don't. All institutions are required to abide by OhioLINK policy.
If there are special circumstances causing the item to be late, then it is the responsibility of the borrowing library to notify the lending library if there is a specific problem with the item (lost, stolen, damaged, etc.). The item should not be renewed just because a patron wants a longer loan period.
Here are two ways for the owning library to find items that have been renewed too long:
- In "Management Information," "Create lists of records," run a list of items with the status @ and due at least 21 weeks in the future (contact your lead implementer if you need assistance with this). Print the title, barcode, notes and date due. The date the item was requested should appear in the notes. Review the list using "display holds on a title" where the original check out date and date due appear. If any date due is 21 weeks or more from the original check out date, send a note to the p-circ contact at the borrowing library and ask for more information about the circumstances that prompted the additional renewals.
OR
- If your library regularly reviews paging slips for holds, you may see item records under "display holds on a title" that are due more than 21 weeks from the original check out date. Send a note to the p-circ contact at the borrowing library and ask for more information about the circumstances that prompted the additional renewals.
