OhioLINK and IOP Publishing sign transformative agreement

Jan 5, 2023

OhioLINK, Ohio’s academic library consortium, has entered into a 3-year transformative agreement with IOP Publishing (IOPP). The agreement provides OhioLINK member institution authors the opportunity to publish unlimited open access articles at no cost to the author and at no additional cost to OhioLINK institutions. In addition, OhioLINK library users have expanded reading access to 72 IOPP journals across the fields of physics, materials science, biosciences, astronomy and astrophysics, environmental sciences, and mathematics. The contract began on January 1, 2023 and will continue through December 31, 2025.

“I’m happy to be able to add these important benefits for our members without additional costs for our institutions or the state of Ohio,” said OhioLINK Executive Director Amy Pawlowski. “OhioLINK has enjoyed a long-standing and productive working relationship with IOPP, and we look forward to our continued collaboration.”

Open access publishing is considered to be a more egalitarian approach to sharing academic research. The immediate worldwide availability of open access articles results in broader dissemination of scholarship and more citations for authors, which many believe accelerates innovation.

“More than half of US researchers who publish their work with us choose to do so via open access to benefit from a wider readership and greater impact for their work,” said Julian Wilson, Sales and Marketing Director at IOPP. “Our agreement with OhioLINK consolidates our relationship with forward-looking consortia and our presence in the region.”

Considered one of the leading library consortia in the United States, OhioLINK has 88 academic library members from public and private institutions, including ten very high and high research activity institutions, as well as most 2-year colleges. The consortium serves over 800,000 students, 48,000 faculty, and 50,000 state employees by negotiating more than 65 consortial contracts each year for statewide, shared library resources.

The agreement with IOPP is OhioLINK's third "cost neutral" transformative agreement for members. The first agreement with Cambridge University Press was was announced in January 2022, with an agreement with Wiley following in March. The transformative or "read and publish" agreements helped 32 OhioLINK member institutions avoid more than $2.2 million in article publishing charges through the end of November 2022.

OhioLINK member institution authors can find more information about publishing in IOPP journals at OhioLINK’s IOPP Journals Open Access Publishing: Information for Authors page.
